YO! Mateo youth advocates implemented our fourth store makeover of The Golden Glaze Bakery and Market in July 2013. We removed an old wooden produce box and replaced it with beautiful produce baskets! When we asked Teresa and Salvador what was one wish for their store, they wished for a refrigerator to keep their produce fresh.
After conducting research we found an affordable fridge that was the perfect size for their store. Teresa and Salvador were so excited once it arrived and together we installed and fully stocked the refrigerator. When we checked in with them a week later, Teresa was happy to tell us that they have been selling more produce now.
We also separated all of the sugary beverages and the healthy beverages into separate refrigerators. We also re-arranged their can food section, making it easier for customers to find what they are looking for.
During the unveiling we spoke about our experience walking from store to store and devoting countless hours in North Fair Oaks building relationships with storeowners. “Many adults don’t know how much time we invest.” said Gabriel Estacuy. We also expressed how committed we are to increasing healthy produce in North Fair Oaks by physically cleaning, building, and moving store fixtures. “As soon as we were finished building the new produce baskets we realized more people were purchasing produce.” said Mario Vasquez. In response to the hard work we and our community partners put into making over cornerstores, Dr. Scott Gee, Director of Prevention & Health Information, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, publicly stated, “Las Tienditas Saludables is the most successful of all campaigns helping to increase community access to fresh healthy produce in Northern California.”
